Who we are
Born and raised in Mabalacat, Pampanga, Philippines, Melanie affectionately known as Lanie, built her life and business around the Filipino food she grew up cooking, sharing, and loving. Food was always at the heart of her home, shaped by the rich culinary traditions of Kapampangan and Ilocano cuisine, passed down through generations.
After immigrating to Colorado, Lanie found herself longing for the flavors of home. That longing became the foundation of a dream. In September 1992, she opened what is widely recognized as one of Colorado’s earliest Filipino grocery stores in Aurora, Colorado. What began as a modest 800‑square‑foot Philippine market and kitchenette on Dayton Street steadily grew into a 3,600‑square‑foot market and restaurant near Sable Boulevard by the Aurora Mall, built through years of hard work, perseverance, and the unwavering support of the Filipino community and friends from all walks of life.
Lanie’s Philippine Market and Kitchenette quickly became a cultural and culinary cornerstone for Filipinos throughout Colorado and neighboring states. It was more than a place to eat, it was a gathering place, a reminder of home, and a source of pride for the community.
Over the years, the business earned widespread recognition, including features in The Denver Post, Rocky Mountain News, Philippine American Times, Asian Pacific American Times and PN Magazine. It was praised by Westword, which named it one of Denver’s best “One‑Stop Shop and Nosh,” and received four stars from The Gabby Gourmet Restaurant Show. Lanie and her kitchenette were also featured on Channel 7 News and highlighted on KHOW 1190 AM radio. In a meaningful acknowledgment of its impact, the business was mentioned in Mayor Tauer’s State of the City address, recognizing its role in strengthening Aurora’s cultural diversity.
These honors were earned through Lanie’s unwavering dedication to serving truly authentic Filipino food dishes rooted in tradition, bold in flavor, and made with heart. Beyond the storefront, Lanie proudly shared Filipino cuisine through catering and community events such as Taste of Asia, The Bluebird, and functions at Buckley Air Force Base, bringing comfort, connection, and the joy of Filipino home cooking to generations of families.
Today, Lanie’s Philippine Kitchenette (LanieLPK) stands as a testament to resilience, cultural pride, and the power of food to bring people together preserving heritage, honoring community, and welcoming everyone to the Filipino table, one plate at a time.
